How our Legal Awards and Rankings work, and what makes an Elite Awarded Law Firm or Recommended Firm?

This article highlights the process and introduces the new metrics that we already used in 2020 for the rankings and awards. It is an update of our article, "What makes an Elite Awarded Law Firm & Lawyer," published in 2018.

On our The Lawyers Global ranking system, we evaluate approximately 20,000 global law firms selected from several different and credible sources' listings (Bloomberg, BTI, Legal 500, and others), along with the information that firms send us. All data collected is then processed through our proprietary algorithms that, in its inner logic, process data for different metrics and delivers the final rankings list.

The process

Concerning the metrics, many are prevalent to other law firms and lawyers' rankings; we consider data that other ranking processes aren't generally considered. We discard other metrics that we believe produce less reliable results – as an example, we do not consider peer reviews since it is prone to introduce a significant amount of bias on the final results.

In contrast, client reviews are considered; however, having a small weight in the overall processed data for the final results, it is a metric that may introduce a minimal bias to the whole process.

By mid-November, we open the Annual Global Legal Awards for entries. Exceptions might occur in the opening dates, arising from external factors that we might not control (for instance, the COVID-19 pandemic).

We will have an application form open for submissions. We will previously announce it sitewide, on our social media, and with ads on Google and Twitter.

All active firms that were nominated or awarded the previous year will be shortlisted for the next edition. The list of the shortlisted firms is published then on our platform, ordered by firm name. On the form page, the Terms & Conditions for acceptance is visible and must be accepted before submitting.
There is a small processing fee for new firms that apply to the Annual Global Legal Awards, which is paid once and last for life.

The metrics

We believe that some of the metrics used by other ranking systems have a subjective and less reliable overall result, as mentioned before. In an analogy, one might have 500k followers on a social network and not convert in business value or, another example, a firm might have 2000 followers. Most of them are friends and family of their partners or associates. These examples may also apply to peer reviews. Some of those metrics or data somewhat weaken the rankings and their real value and reliability.

The main metrics we consider, not disclosing others that are part of our proprietary algorithm logic, are the following:

  • Total Revenue by year;
  • Average Revenue – the last ten years figures (when data is made available);
  • Total Revenue by Quarter;
  • Total Global announced Deals by volume and count;
  • Total Regional announced Deals by volume and count;
  • Total Profit by partner;
  • Total Profit by non-equity partner;
  • Total Revenue per Lawyer;
  • Total Practice Areas – Globally and by Country;
  • Brand value ranking.
  • Brand value evaluated;
  • Total Countries and jurisdictions (where the firm operates);
  • Total Offices globally;
  • Total Offices by Country (where the firm operates);
  • Total Partners;
  • Total non–equity Partners;
  • Total Lawyers count;
  • Total Counsels count;
  • Total Paralegal count;
  • Total Associates;
  • Total headcount;
  • Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policies and effective actions;
  • Gender gap reduction rating;
  • Best firm to Work rankings;
  • Client Satisfaction data collected from other reliable sources;
  • Total Testimonials and Reviews received and their average value at the time when the ranking process starts;
  • Compliance with Data Protection Regulations and consumer protection;

In some cases, the higher the values or rankings may have a negative effect, depending on which prism they are evaluated. For instance, a high value of Total Partners may be read by candidates as a barrier to their future career progress when compared with the firm's Total headcount or not. The above is just an example of how the algorithm works and how the rankings can be interpreted, although each metric, as mentioned before, has its interpretations, and some may even be entirely subjective.

Important notice for listed Law Firms

It's crucially important that your information keeps updated on our system. It increases your firm's chance of being selected and found, contributing to the annual rankings.

If your law firm is listed, use our contacts form here to contact us concerning any updates on your firm's listing.

The Results

The results are announced on our platform and our social media. There will be a winner and outstanding firms for each of the categories:

  • Country Awards (e.g., USA);
  • Sub-Regional Awards (e.g., Northern America);
  • Continent Awards (e.g., North America;
  • Global Awards – a list of the top global firms, usually between 100 to 150 law firms.

Summary

In summary, what makes a The Lawyers Global Elite Winner or Outstanding Law Firm, is greater than the sum of all the parts (metrics) that produce the semi-final rankings.

The final rankings are then compiled from the top listed and ranked firms by their Country, Sub-Region, Continent, and Global ranking positions.

In summary, we can state that the computed metrics return results with a high level of confidence, forming the annual awards and rankings positionings.
